Rewind Trauma Therapy

What is trauma and how would I know if I had it?

Generally speaking there are 3 types of trauma:

  • Acute: Resulting from a single event (e.g. a car accident, witness a distressing event)
  • Chronic: Stems from repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing events (domestic abuse)
  • Complex: involves exposure to multiple traumatic events, often in childhood or over a long period of time, affecting emotional & psychological development.

Please place the above ‘definitions’ aside because attempting to define trauma is almost impossible as it is never the event, but the interpretation the mind places on the happening. Trauma then, is as individual as you are and will be different things to different people. No one person right and no person wrong. Trauma just is.

When we experience a significant event(s), and the mind judges it to be so important that this must never happen to us again – your amazing mind will store the memory in the front of the mind (pre frontal cortex). Which actually makes perfect sense. The only issue is that particular threat may have been a ‘one-off’ event, but the mind doesn’t wish to let it go because its purpose is to keep you safe. It then becomes the lense through which you see your life and the mind ‘feels’ that you need to be constantly reminded of it. This is why it will continually invade your thoughts – because it is so important and it must not be forgotten.

If you have experienced such an event(s) which continually invade your thoughts and you are very aware that these thoughts and consequent feelings are negatively influencing your life please book a discovery call and I’ll send you a questionnaire to complete. Completely free of charge.

This is an Impact of Events Score, which is an internationally used tool. This is completed with how you have been feeling over the past 7 – 10 days re the event – and we score it. Score over a certain point and we can move the memory from the front of the mind into deep memory. So still there and still yours but by re-locating it within the mind, it loses it’s emotional charge.
