Top ten tips to ensure your feet are ready for summer

Your feet are important

Yet are one of the most neglected but most used parts of the body with the average adult taking between 4,000 to 6,000 steps a day. Research from The College of Podiatry shows that 9 in 10 of us experience some sort of foot problem, with one in five admitting to suffering with foot pain often or constantly.

 

However, we continue to ignore them. After all if it becomes too unbearable a trip to a podiatrist will help. Not only can they assess your feet, provide valuable insights about your foot care, treat any issues but also establish any possible forthcoming problems if left untreated.

 

However the following simple tips may help prevent any issues from developing and help get your feet ready for summer:

  • Dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially in between the toes which is where fungal infections can develop
  • Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water and moisturise avoiding between the toes – use a pumice or foot file to remove hard skin
  • Trim toenails regularly and carefully with proper nail clippers and avoid cutting at an angle or down the edges
  • Avoid socks with tight elastic at the top or ridges and wear socks at night if your feet are cold
  • Your feet swell as the day goes on so shop for new shoes in the afternoon to ensure they will always be comfortable
  • If you wear high heels for work, wear comfortable shoes to and from work then change into your heels in the office
  • Try and limit the time when wearing high heels and always ensure you wear appropriate shoe’s for whatever activity you are doing
  • Change your socks daily to keep your feet fresh
  • Wear flip flops in the gym showers, when in wet communal areas at the swimming pool, or hotel bathrooms
  • Pay more attention to your feet by looking for discoloration, bumps, blisters, sores, corns or bunions etc
